Waterplay Environment

Play

Ecological

Changing play interests, water economy and supervision requirements have prompted several municipalities to reexamine some of its existing wading pools. PMA has been developing such alternatives, the splash pad, for the past ten years.

The splash pads have been showcasing the custom design potential of waterplay that result when the landscape architect collaborates with the water play manufacturer. Even with modest budgets, unique designs suited to the specifics and context of site can be created. Although primarily designed for summer use, the sculptural qualities of the playground lend interest all year round.

PMA designs for optimum parent supervision, with informal seating by means of seat walls or berms, with plenty of shade trees for sun relief. Another design priority is the interactivity of the waterplay experience. Mechanical consultant Resicom, incorporates a programmable logic controller to automate interactive play that allows for the adjustment of play sequences and facilitates maintenance. The ultimate measure of success is the users enjoyment and continued participation in the splash pad.
