The Stoney Creek Recreation Center project was the development of a new swimming pool and community center on an existing arena site on King Street in Stoney Creek. The project envisioned a new community building close to King Street and contributing to a new urban fabric. The program included anew lap pool. Leisure pool, gymnasium, group exercise room, seniors and youth centers and associated public spaces.

PMA was responsible for the design of a new parking lot and drop off area. Working closely with the City Urban Design department the design became the City’s first Woonerf. This is a Dutch inspired word meaning a living street. Here pedestrians and cars share space and traffic is calmed by the physical design of the space. PMA developed a drop off area that incorporated at grade planters, healthy tree pits, patterned concrete and handicapped parking spaces all into an inclusive shared space environment. The urban plaza is planted with a variety of flowering trees and perennials. A dry storm water pond on site was seeded with native grasses and water tolerant species.
